The Light Shineth in Darkness
In the book of Psalms, in the Bible, we read a verse in Psalm 18 v 28 “For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness”.
What a precious thought that the God of heaven can enlighten our darkness.
Right from the first chapter of the Bible through to the last chapter of the Bible the metaphor of light and darkness is used to illustrate stark contrasts and to provide clear spiritual lessons to us.
Sometimes light is associated with good compared to darkness as evil whilst other times light represents life and darkness reminds us of death.
As we look around us today God is rarely mentioned and as we currently find ourselves in dark days there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel, just more shades of darkness, confusion and uncertainty. While sometimes we may be unnerved by the darkness in the world, we can be assured that God’s perfect light casts out fear.
Our verse reminds us that God provides the light source to illuminate this darkness and this is His Word, the Bible. Another Psalm states “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119 v 105).
Although the surroundings we find ourselves in currently, may be dark, the Word of God provides us light to “enlighten our darkness”. It can lighten the path and provide light, like a lamp before us, as we step forward into the future.
The Word of God can also enlighten us today with the good news message of the Bible that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son” (John 3 v 16). His name was the Lord Jesus Christ and it was said of him “In him was life; and the life was the light of men” (John 1v4). He lived a perfect life and came “to give light to them that sit in darkness” (Luke 1v79)
The Bible states “all have sinned” (Romans 3 v 23) but the Lord Jesus went to the cross of Calvary and there shed his precious blood to pay the price of our sin. He died and arose again the third day. The Bible goes on to declare that if we repent of our sin and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, we can have our sins cleansed. We will be saved and have a guaranteed home in heaven. Today, we can be transformed from the spiritual darkness of sin “into his marvellous light:” (1 Peter 2 v 9).
The Lord Jesus said “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8 v 12).
Will YOU follow the Lord Jesus Christ today? – will you let him enlighten your darkness?
“Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6 v 2)
